House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Doc Hastings (WA-04) and Energy and Mineral Resources Subcommittee Chairman Doug Lamborn (CO-05) sent a letter today to businesses, manufacturers, energy producers, and researchers seeking input on ways to expand America’s domestic helium production on federal land.

Earlier this year, Congress passed and the President signed into law H.R. 527, the Helium Stewardship Act of 2013. This legislation preserves our Nation’s helium supply and closes the helium reserve over the next decade. The Committee now intends to focus on developing additional domestic sources of helium, which is used for life saving MRI machines, computer chips, fiber optic cables, and national defense devices.

“Next year, the House Natural Resources Committee will turn our attention to promoting a longer term solution to securing our nation’s helium supplies beyond the life of the reserve by growing and expanding our domestic helium production,” wrote Chairman Hastings and Subcommittee Chairman Lamborn in the letter. “As we begin the process of drafting new legislation, we would like to again reach out to all interested parties and individuals who assisted us throughout the process of the passage of the Helium Stewardship Act for additional thoughts. Our overarching goal is to secure, streamline, and improve domestic helium production on federal land.”
